Upgrade to Airline Pilot Captain

When an airline pilot’s seniority number can hold captain on an aircraft, the common pilot career advise is to upgrade as soon as a pilot can hold it. There are a few different reasons for this and I understand that some pilot’s situations will not allow it, such as family.

One of the biggest problems with an airline pilot upgrading as soon as they can hold it is their quality of life goes down the toilet. The pilot may have to commute to their base and of course the pilot will be on reserve for probably some time. If an airline pilot can handle the decrease in quality of life, upgrading can be worth it. Read more

Airline Pilot Job and Management

I have been asked a few times what pilot job I liked the most, my airline pilot job or corporate pilot job. I tell people that both jobs have their positives and negatives and that both pilot jobs are very different. In this article, I am going to mainly focus on the amount of control a person can have over the pilot in an airline pilot job setting and a corporate pilot job setting.

I remember a few years ago I heard about a job satisfaction study that measured job satisfaction and stress levels for management and non-management employees. The assumption by many is that management level employees might have a higher stress level and lower job satisfaction than non-management employees. The study concluded that job satisfaction among management level employees was much higher and this contributed to lower stress levels. The management level employee has the most control which leads to more job satisfaction. Based on my experience as an airline pilot and a corporate pilot I would have to agree. Read more

Fly Free Airline Flight Benefits

One of the best perks of an airline pilot job is the opportunity to fly for free. Flying free is a benefit given to most airline employees at most airlines. Some airlines like Delta, are seniority system based when getting a non-rev seat. Other airlines like American Airlines is first come first serve for the non-rev seat. There are often different rules at each airlines, but the basic benefit is the opportunity to fly free on a pilots time off.

During my years as an airline pilot I took advantage of the ability to fly for free and I traveled to a few nice and interesting places with almost nothing out of my pocket. Many of those times I did get to fly free in first-class, but I think as of today, many of the airlines are starting to put restrictions on employees flying free in first-class. But it is still a great benefit. Read more
